In a Sustainable Views article by journalist Seth O’Farrell, plastic policy experts including our Managing Director Stefanie Beitien, Damien Sanjuan and Salmon Aidan Lee weighed in on the ongoing plastic treaty negotiations and the actions that national governments are individually carrying out to address the plastic crisis within their borders.
“South-east Asian countries are disproportionately affected by the plastics crisis, so they are all very aware of the problem and are starting to address it,” said Stefanie.
While progress of plastics regulations is “uneven” in Asia, many countries are moving ahead with policies like mandatory recycled content targets and EPR to combat the plastic waste challenge. Low virgin plastic prices, fragmented waste infrastructure, and limited scalability of reuse and refill models still hinder efforts to reduce plastic consumption.
Talks on a global plastics treaty have entered a fourth year without agreement, and competing views among different member states on the Treaty’s ultimate aim remains the big challenge: should it reduce plastic pollution or address the entire lifecycle and reduce virgin plastic?
