Vietnam Today’s Inside Asia series honed in on Asia’s growing plastic pollution problem and invited PCX Solutions Managing Director Stefanie Beitien to share insights on solutions such as plastic credits and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).
The interest in compliance schemes that include plastic credits is growing, especially from countries that are hard hit by the plastic crisis.
They offer a way to channel money directly to waste management in fragmented systems while allowing for long term systemic change. Plastic credits assign a value to plastic waste and help change the unit economics of plastic.
“If you make companies take responsibility of their plastic footprint for example through plastic credits, they have to add the cost of the credits to the virgin plastic price and thereby reduce the price gap to alternative materials and recycled content,” she explained.
The whole of Asia is known to produce more than half of global plastic waste, much of which ends up in rivers and oceans. Countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines are found to be among the top contributors.
Stefanie says that there is a huge gap for solid waste management (SWM) infrastructure in the region, especially in developing countries hard hit by plastic pollution. “Only 9% of plastics have been recycled today and we now have over nine billion tons of legacy plastic waste.”
Plastic credits can be used as a voluntary measure and in mandatory schemes, and deliver both environmental and social impact.
Exciting to see Vietnam's interest in the EPR space!
